What to Pack for Your First Campervan Trip (UK Edition)

Packing for your first campervan trip can feel like a bit of a guessing game. My partner and I packed way to much stuff on our first trip. Do you need to bring everything? What’s already there? And how do you avoid overpacking for a space that’s all about simplicity?

The good news is, you really don’t need much at all — especially when your campervan is set up properly (like Curly is!). In fact, most first-time travellers are surprised by how little they actually use once they’re on the road.

Here’s a simple guide to help you pack with confidence.

What’s Already Taken Care Of

One of the biggest advantages of travelling by campervan is that so much is already included. From cooking equipment to your sleeping setup, the essentials are built in — so you’re not starting from scratch.

A well-equipped campervan means you can travel lighter, settle in quickly, and focus on enjoying the journey rather than managing logistics.

The Essentials

Think of this as packing for a relaxed, outdoorsy weekend — not a full relocation.

Clothing
Layers are key in the UK. Even in summer, evenings can cool down quickly. Bring comfortable clothes you can mix and match, a waterproof jacket, a sweater for evenings and flip flops for those campsite showers.

Food & Drink
It’s always worth bringing something simple for your first evening — especially if you arrive later than planned. A few easy meals, snacks, and your go-to tea or coffee will go a long way. We always include a little hamper of goodies like tea and coffee to make sure you’re covered.

Toiletries
Keep it minimal. A small wash bag with your daily essentials is all you need. If you have one, a quick-drying towel can be useful too.

Nice-to-Haves

These are the little extras that make your trip feel even more special.

A cosy blanket for sitting outside in the evenings, a good book, a portable speaker for music, or some soft lighting can completely transform your space. None of it is essential — but it all adds to the experience.

What You Don’t Need

This is where most people go wrong.

You don’t need to bring your entire wardrobe, a full kitchen setup, or loads of “just in case” items. Space is limited, and part of the joy of campervan travel is keeping things simple.

The less you bring, the easier everything feels.

A Few First-Timer Tips

If it’s your first trip, try not to overplan. Book your first night, have a rough idea of where you’d like to go, and leave the rest open.

Arriving before dark on your first evening can make things feel much more relaxed, and shorter driving days tend to make for a more enjoyable trip overall.

Most importantly, give yourself time to slow down. That’s what this kind of travel is all about.

Ready to Go

Once you’ve packed the basics, you’re good to go. Campervan travel isn’t about having everything — it’s about having just enough, and making space for the moments in between.

And those are usually the best parts.
